She and her longtime on–off boyfriend Justin Bieber ended their relationship once and for all in 2018.
And Selena Gomez said that she was ‘really proud’ of how the turbulent coupling made her more mature in a podcast appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast on Monday.
The 29-year-old Only Murders In The Building star said that focusing on herself helped her to stand up for her needs.
Moving on: Selena Gomez, 29, said she was ‘really proud’ of how her breakup from Justin Bieber made her more mature in a podcast appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast on Monday; seen June 11 in Hollywood
‘It allowed me to develop a character where I don’t tolerate any sort of nonsense or disrespect,’ she said of the breakup with Bieber, 28, who married the model Hailey Bieber just months after his breakup in 2018.
Even though she’s more secure in her place in the entertainment industry now, Selena initially felt unmoored after the split.
‘I was, you know, obviously going through a really tough breakup, and then I was left with the question of my career and where am I gonna go and what’s gonna happen,’ she recounted.
Making her situation even more complicated was her lupus diagnosis, which required a kidney transplant in 2017, a year before the breakup.
Standing up for herself: ‘It allowed me to develop a character where I don’t tolerate any sort of nonsense or disrespect,’ she said of the breakup with Bieber, 28, who married the model Hailey Bieber just months after his breakup in 2018; seen in 2011 in LA
Higher expectations: ‘I find my toleration of any sort of discomfort, usually disrespect, or whatever, even just unnecessary stuff — it’s not taking over me anymore,’ she said; seen in 2011
‘And then my medical stuff kind of kicked in, but being on the other side of it, I have to be honest, it’s actually been really good for me,’ she admitted.
‘It was necessary for me to walk through those things, I had a lot of soul searching to do,’ continued Selena. ‘By all means, I don’t have life figured out, but I do know that during that time I was learning so much about myself.’
In the wake of the turbulence of her medical issues and her romantic life, the Spring Breakers star isn’t rushing into any new relationships.
‘I find my toleration of any sort of discomfort, usually disrespect, or whatever, even just unnecessary stuff — it’s not taking over me anymore,’ she said.
Role models: She praised her Only Murders In The Buildings costars Steve Martin and Martin Short. ‘My expectation for a man, to be honest, or any human, is to be as decent as these two human beings are’
The actress and singer is currently receiving some of the best reviews of her career for her hit Hulu comedy series Only Murders In The Building, on which she costars with comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short.
In addition to starring on the mystery series, she also serves as one of its executive producers, along with Martin and Short, whom she said inspired her on set and pushed her to expect more from her own partners.
‘Being around two adult gentlemen — because that’s what they are, they are very sweet and kind and hilarious and inappropriate sometimes and it’s the best — I just learned so much,’ she gushed. ‘And my expectation for a man, to be honest, or any human, is to be as decent as these two human beings are. They have been doing this longer than I’ve been alive, and they are the kindest people.’
Selena also recounted a hilarious moment when she played Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s raunchy single WAP for the older comedians.
‘It was hysterical. They weren’t offended, they were just confused. They were like, “So wait, do women like this?” I was like, “Yeah, I guess it’s a thing, you know, it’s a vibe, I don’t know.’ They’re hilarious,’ she recounted.
Back to music: She added that she’s back in the recording studio until she has to start filming Only Murders In The Building season three; seen June 11
With season two of Only Murders In The Building wrapped and set to premiere on Hulu on June 22, Selena is now free to get back to focusing on her music career.
‘I finished season two, I did my cooking show, and now I’m gonna be in the studio until season three. So basically we’re going to be just working on new music,’ she said.
Even though it might simplify her career, the Wizards Of Waverly Place star doesn’t have any interest in just sticking to acting or singing.
‘Like I said, I couldn’t do one or the other. I actually love both… My therapist is like, “Girl, are you ever gonna find a man?!” I’m like, “I dunno”… But I do feel like right now, in my life, I am just so open, and I love what I do… I just am in a really good space right now, and I’m enjoying it.’
