With 139 million followers, Selena Gomez is in no danger of losing her crown as the most followed person on Instagram. But one title that was taken from her last year was the record for having the most ‘liked’ photo on the social network. Yesterday, she won it back.
When Gomez posted a collection of Instagram photos marking her 26th birthday, she smashed the record previously held by Beyoncé, who follows zero people and has 116 million followers. According to pop-culture Twitter account Pop Crave, Gomez’s pics received one million ‘likes’ in less than 13
“Another year down.. Thank you for all the bday love,” Gomez captioned her boat party pics. “I couldn’t be more appreciative of you and my best friends for celebrating with me. I love you guys like crazy! God bless!”
The seven images of the singer and her friends on a yacht in Newport Beach, California, garnered more than 8.2 million likes — and counting — in less than a day after it was uploaded, making it the most ‘liked’ Instagram upload in the shortest time period.
To put that into perspective, when Beyoncé stole the title in February 2017 — for the OTT photo she posted to announce her pregnancy with Sir and Rumi Carter — she clocked up 6.4 million likes in the span of several hours.
The 36-year-old singer then broke her own record months later when she shared the first photo of her newborn twins cradled in her arms. That post racked up 7.8 million double-taps in its first 12 hours.
But Gomez should enjoy the title while it lasts. With rumours Beyoncé could be pregnant with her fourth child, it’s likely she’d soon be reigning supreme if she drops another pregnancy announcement pic. Watch this space…
