Reluctant sex symbol: The Match Point star loves that how Janet Leigh was able to successfully balance being a ‘good actor’ and ‘sexy’
Scarlett recently told Total Film Magazine how excited she is to play Janet Leigh, the actress whose character is murdered in the infamous shower scene.
‘There was never really an actor I wanted to portray or do a biopic of but I do love Janet Leigh,’ she said.
‘I’ve always loved her. She was such a good actor and sexy. But it never got in the way of her work. She was spunky and her relationship with Hitchcock was famously one of great admiration and affection between them.’
However, being a good actor and sexy has definitely made Johansson feel pigeonholed as a sex symbol.
‘I never wanted to be a sex symbol. I wanted to be a character actor. Those are the actors I often mostly admire,’ said the Lost In Translation star.
The Golden Globe-nominated actress continued, ‘But I think women that are curvy can be pigeonholed in that bombshell thing. I never think of my characters that way. What can you do about it? As I get older, I think I’m seeing more multifaceted roles. I’m past the ingenue phase, which I’m very thankful for, but I’m happy it’s over.’
She’ll soon join Inception star Joseph Gordon-Levitt in his directorial debut feature Don Jon’s Addiction, a comedy about a porn-addicted ladies man who learns to be less selfish.
Also out this year is Under the Skin, Jonathan Glazer’s film in which Scarlett plays an alien in human form on a journey through Scotland.
