Elizabeth Olsen has vented her frustration that commitment to her role as Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film series has resulted in her missing out on roles she really wanted to do.

Marvel star Elizabeth Olsen has spoken of her frustration that her role as Scarlet Witch has derailed her career by forcing her to miss out on other work.

The 33-year old Hollywood actress has played Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch since making a cameo appearance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014.

But she believes her commitment to the Marvel Cinematic Universe has left her unable to feature in roles she feels she’d be more suited to.

Her first prominent part as Scarlet Witch arrived a year later when she was cast in Avengers: Age of Ultron – with her character returning in four further Marvel films, along with her own Emmy-nominated series, WandaVision.

“It took me away from the physical ability to do certain jobs that I thought were more aligned with the things I enjoyed as an audience member,” she told the New York Times.

“And this is me being the most honest.”

The actress was particularly upset at missing out on appearing in The Lobster, which went on to win the jury prize at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and receive an Oscar nomination for original screenplay.

“I was in a contract [for Marvel] I could not get out of. So that didn’t work out,” she explained.

“I started to feel frustrated. I had this job security, but I was losing these pieces that I felt were more part of my being. And the further I got away from that, the less I became considered for it.”

Despite this, the actress said she wouldn’t be averse to the idea of to reprising the role once more for a standalone production centred on the Scarlet Witch.
