This incredible frog is so enormous that it has perplexed Twitter as a whole! Even more people questioned whether it even existed.
Everyone has told us not to believe everything we see on the internet. That is generally sound advice, as the internet can be a plethora of doctored photographs and bogus tales. However, even if it’s difficult to believe, the internet can connect us with real people and things all across the world. That’s what happened when a photo of a frog went viral on the internet.
People don’t believe the frog is real because it appears to be enormous.
Earlier this month, a photo began to circulate on Twitter, sparking dispute about its veracity. People were doubtful that the big frog was a real animal because it resembled Jabba the Hutt’s long-lost cousin. Many people assumed it was a hoax or that it was some type of shellless turtle.
Despite this, the photograph was retweeted, liked, and shared hundreds of times, catching the attention of a scientist.
Jodi Rowley is a conservation biologist with a love of frogs who uses Twitter. She was quick to clear up any misconceptions about the image. Many people were surprised when she revealed it was a real frog.
Its massive, fat appearance is due to a self-defense mechanism in which it inflates itself with air to appear more threatening when threatened. The frog is the Blunt-headed Burrowing Frog, commonly known as Glyphoglossus molossus.
“This #frog is doing the rounds on social media. It’s a Blunt-headed Burrowing Frog (Glyphoglossus molossus). Native to drier parts of mainland SE Asia, this species spends most of its life underground, waiting for rain- they’ve a great shape for burrowing & conserving water.”
What do you think of the frog? Have you ever seen this species before? Let us know!
