The two upcoming transfer windows could be huge for Chelsea and their new ownership in rebuilding the squad, with the need to quickly implement the new philosophy while building a team able to compete at the very top once again. Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have already looked to invest hundreds of millions in the transfer market, but their work is far from done.
While the focus has switched to recruitment of promising youngsters, the problem areas in the current side are still the same ones faced in the past few years. One of those is the midfield, where a mix of ageing players, expiring contracts and injury concerns has cause for concern.
One of those in the central ranks that has a currently uncertain future is Jorginho, with the midfielder approaching the final few months of his deal at Stamford Bridge. The Italy international endured a tough start to become a stalwart in the midfield, crucial in the side’s most recent Premier League title triumph as well as the Champions League.
With his contract expiring and his career entering the latter years, an exit from Stamford Bridge could well be on the cards soon. A whole host of clubs have been linked, with Barcelona and Newcastle named amongst a number of Serie A clubs that could see him make a return to the division.
However, according to La Repubblica, Jorginho “dreams” of a return to Napoli, where he earned his rise to notoriety on the world’s biggest stages. It would be a huge return if so, but as it stands, the report claims that his current salary is too high to rejoin the Azzurri on current terms.
That’s not to say it’s all decided, though a stay at Chelsea could be more likely after a claim from his agent Joao Santos, who told TMW: “We’ve received a proposal from Chelsea to sign a new contract so it’s our priority to discuss with Chelsea.
“Napoli interest? We’d be happy of their interest, it’s a special club for Jorginho but there’s nothing as of now.”
