Ginger Biscuit was found as a tiny little kitten in a storm drain, completely soaked after a big rainstorm. He was then taken to the Greenside Animal Hospital to get checked.
Ginger was quite nervous as he got to the hospital, and this is expected. He was very confused, and at only 8 to 10 weeks old, he wasn’t sure what to make of all these people coming in to care for him.

“[Ginger] is shy but very loving and likes attention once he has overcome his initial fear of contact with our team who cares for him,” said both Dr. Joubert Viljoen and Dr. Suzette Greube, owners of Greenside Animal Hospital, to The Dodo.
“He is a bit wary of people when they enter the isolation ward until he sees us bringing food, then he is happy to creep out of his shell and interact.”
Ginger got a whole section of the ward to himself until Anne came along.

Meet Anne, a stray pup who was found very weak and covered in fleas. She was very sick and when brought to the hospital, the staff immediately helped to heal her.

Typically, cats and dogs are kept away from each other to avoid any contact between the two, their crates were completely across the room from each other to maintain this, although Ginger didn’t agree with the plan.
Staff came to check on Ginger one day and found out that he wasn’t in his crate, instead, he was found cuddling with Anne in her crate.
“We underestimated the kitten’s ability to wriggle itself through the door of the cage he was placed in.”
“With the little dog being so weak, we never considered her to be a risk to the kitten, but when we saw them together the first time around, there definitely was a moment of panic, seeing as some dogs don’t react well to cats and vice versa.”
Although on this occasion they could see how gentle the pair were with each other, it seemed like they kept each other calm.

And when staff tried to separate them, they couldn’t, so it was then that they decided Ginger and Anne belonged together.
“After initially discovering them together, we moved the kitten back into his cage, as his litter box, food and water was in there, but he immediately made his way out of the cage and back to his friend.”

So staff now let the unlikely pair share a crate at all times, and you can see that they couldn’t be more glad.
Ginger has helped Anne recover from the weak pup she was when she first arrived into the strong and healthy pup she is today.
“It is definitely a case of ‘yours, mine and ours’ with these two. They love to snuggle and even have meals together! They have toys, but the kitten’s favourite pastime is chasing Anne’s tail!”
