CM Punk‘s skills with the mic have always captivated the wrestling world, so when he was pitched against Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, there was always going to be fireworks, both inside and outside the ring.
The Rock was one of the most prominent performers in the industry either side of the Millennium. However, this kick-started his acting career, which soon became a full-time job.
However, he often made sporadic appearances on various WWE programming. In 2013, he went up against CM Punk for the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble, and the two left no stone unturned in their promos leading up to the match.
The Rock vs CM Punk
A promo clip from Raw recently resurfaced of the multi-time WWE Champion roasting The Rock ahead of their clash.
CM Punk said that The People’s Champion was playing ‘kiddie’ games with his insults and antics.
“You’re playing little league with your little insults and your rhymes and your millions and millions and your finallys. And I’m in the big leagues and I’m swinging for the fence. You need to understand that your little jabs and your insults. It’s all kiddie games. You can’t leave a mark on the champ’s face. Come Royal Rumble understand that when you step in the ring, your arms are just too short to box with God.”
Video: CM Punk destroying The Rock with promo
“Very few, who could do this to The Rock, very few,” “We don’t discuss enough how Cena and Punk were consistently cooking The Rock,” “Could arguably be my favourite line in any promo ever,” and “‘Your arms are just too short to box with God’ will forever be one of the coldest lines!!!!!” were just a few responses to the viral clip.
During the exchange, The Rock simply stared down CM Punk, but when the pair finally got in the ring, it was The Rock who came out on top.
What happened during The Rock’s feud with CM Punk?
Before the contest began, on January 27, 2013, it was stipulated that Punk would be stripped of the title if The Shield interfered. Punk originally pinned The Rock to retain after the stable put The Brahma Bull through a table while the arena lights were out. This led Vince McMahon to come out and announce that Punk would be stripped of the title, but he instead restarted the match at The Rock’s request.
Punk lost, ending his reign at 434 days.
What pay-per-view did Cody Rhodes debut at?
WWE recognised this reign as the longest world championship reign of the modern era, until Universal Champion Brock Lesnar broke that record in June 2018.
Punk received a title rematch with The Rock on February 17 at Elimination Chamber, but he once again came up short.
On the February 25 episode of Raw, Punk faced Royal Rumble winner John Cena for his status as number one contender to the WWE Championship, but once again, he lost.
What is The Rock’s WWE future?
It has been speculated that The Rock is set to return at WrestleMania and face Roman Reigns, with a possible return happening this month at the Royal Rumble.
We shall have to wait and see if that comes to fruition, or if it’s just pure gossip.
