The year of 2022 has thankfully seen the full return of film releases back in the cinema.
But which films had Metro’s chief critics screaming in delight?
We look back at the year’s best releases and its most terrible turkeys. From Top Gun: Maverick to Bodies Bodies Bodies. Does your favourite film make it onto the list?
1. The Banshees Of Inisherin
Oscar-tipped black comedy. Co-stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson reunite with their In Bruges director/writer Martin McDonagh for another unforgettable bad bromance.
2. Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical

‘We are revolting children, living in revolting times!’ Tim Minchin’s genius lyrics make this a smash hit, with Alisha Weir, for all ages. See you at the singalong version, out in cinemas January 1.
3. Everything Everywhere All At Once
The most brilliantly bananas movie of 2022 absolutely lives up to its title. Michelle Yeoh kicks all types of ass as a time-travelling laundromat manager in a multiverse of madness.
4. The Worst Person In The World
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind meets Fleabag in Norway with this smart romcom about a drifting bookshop worker (Renate Reinsve) nearing 30.
5. Top Gun: Maverick

Burnished 1980s blockbuster nostalgia as Tom Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer prove they can still make ’em like they used to. Strap in for the thrillingly real aerial dog fights.
6. Living
National treasure Bill Nighy finally gets his shot at Oscars glory as a repressed civil servant in this immaculate British drama, penned by Sir Kazuo Ishiguro.
7. Bodies Bodies Bodies

Whodunnits are back with a vengeance. This inspired slasher twist boasts a thrilling satirical energy and a sizzling Gen Z cast, including Amandla Stenberg and Borat’s Maria Bakalova.
8. Aftersun
Big winner at this year’s British Independent Film Awards, this indie gem casts Paul Mescal (Normal People) as a dad holidaying with his 11-year-old daughter (knockout Frankie Corio).
9. Cow
The British auteur Andrea Arnold (Fish Tank) turns to documentary with this powerful, cow’s eye view of the dairy industry. You may never look a pint of milk in the face again.
10. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

This soulful sequel teams an emotional tribute to late star Chadwick Boseman with some spectacular visual action. A maturity milestone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring Angela Bassett and Winston Duke.
