Romelu Lukaku has made little secret of the fact that he wants to make his loan move from Chelsea to Inter Milan a permanent arrangement.
Lukaku is currently back on loan with Inter, the club Chelsea signed him from in 2021. Things did not work out for the striker in his second spell at Stamford Bridge, and it became evident he felt more at home at San Siro.
Therefore, despite investing a club-record fee in him just a year earlier, Chelsea allowed him to head back to Inter on loan for the 2022-23 season.
Injuries have limited Lukaku to just five appearances since his return to Inter. Within those games, he has scored two goals and added one assist.
However, although his second stint with Inter is yet to really lift off, Lukaku has been leaning towards a permanent stay in Serie A for a while.
Now, in his most recent interview, Lukaku has reiterated that he wants to remain an Inter player beyond the end of his loan from Chelsea.
He told Sky Sport Italia: “All the people know what I want. Now I have to do whatever is necessary with the team to make Inter win and then we’ll talk to Chelsea.”
There was some scepticism about how the Inter fans would take to having Lukaku back.
However, the Belgium international insists everyone is on the same page and it would be “worth everything” for him to continue at the club.
He added: “Even though I left they know that I always had Inter in my heart. I had conversations with teammates, with people from the club, and they know that I told the truth about why I left.\
“Now I am back, and I hope to stay in the future. I want to say that Inter is worth everything to me.”
Romelu Lukaku plots out career away from Chelsea
Although under contract with Chelsea until 2026, Lukaku is seemingly not thinking about going back to Stamford Bridge.
There is one different return on his mind, though, since he envisages finishing his career with his first club, Anderlecht.
That is a long-term vision for the 29-year-old, though. As 2023 gets going, he is focusing on prolonging his Inter spell and is working to reach a solution with Chelsea.
Lukaku explained: “The idea is to finish with Anderlecht. I’m 30 years old, my son started school here and plays in the Inter Academy. I’m fine, Inter always has ambition to keep growing.
“I want to stay here and do things right. I hope to do well with Inter in the next six months, work to the maximum and then at the end we talk to Chelsea and hope to find a solution.”
Overall for Inter, Lukaku has scored a total of 66 goals from 100 games. His record reads much better than what he managed with Chelsea; indeed, across his two spells in west London, he only scored 15 goals from 59 games.
